There’s nothing quite as enticing as the crystal-clear water in your hot tub. To keep the water fresh and clean, it’s important that you stick to regular cleaning routines, inspections and even professional hot tub service. An important task that must be completed on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis is maintaining your hot tub filter. In this article, we’re going to walk you through how to clean and care for your spa filter.

Signs Your Hot Tub Filter Needs Cleaning

To ensure that your spa filter remains in the best condition possible and the water stays clean, you should create a filter maintenance schedule and stick to it. We suggest taking out your filter and rinsing it with water from the hose once a week, giving it a deep cleaning once a month, and replacing it once a year.

Steps to Clean Your Spa Filter

  1. Turn off your hot tub
  2. Remove the filter
  3. Replace with your back-up filter
  4. Turn the hot tub back on
  5. Rinse the filter with water from the hose
  6. Fill a bucket with filter cleaning solution and dilute with water per the cleaner instructions
  7. Place your filter in the bucket and allow it to soak for the recommended amount of time
  8. Remove filter from the water and rinse with water from the hose
  9. Power down your spa, switch the filters, and then turn it back on again

Pro Tip: Stop by your local hot tub store for a filter flosser. This tool easily attaches to your garden hose to allow for better cleaning, as the stream of water will better reach the inner parts of your filter.

Changing Your Hot Tub Filter

Your hot tub filter works hard to keep the water in your spa clean and free of debris. All of the water in your hot tub flows through your filter continuously, which means that after a while it will need some maintenance, and eventually, need to be replaced. We suggest replacing your hot tub filter once a year, while spas that are used more frequently or aren’t diligently maintained may require their filter to be changed sooner rather than later.

Signs that your filter may need to be replaced include:

  • Hard to clean and doesn’t stay clean for long
  • Visibly cracked or damaged
  • Not filtering debris very well, leaving water unclear
